Whole Tooth Column: You don't have to white-knuckle it anymore
New Smiles Dental contributes a monthly column about dental health

SHERWOOD, Ore. — If going to the dentist makes your stomach drop just a little, you're not alone, and you're not being dramatic.
Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons adults avoid the care they know they need. Some patients tell me it's the sounds. Some say it's the feeling of losing control. Others have had a painful experience years ago that never quite left them. Whatever the reason, there is no judgment here. What there is, is a better way.
Dentistry has changed more than most people realize.
The version of dentistry that lives in most people's memories — the sounds, the scraping, the "just let me know if it hurts" — is not what modern dental care looks like. Many practices have invested in technology and training specifically designed to make your experience as comfortable as possible. If you have dental anxiety, here are three things to look for when choosing a dental home.
Multiple sedation options
Not all dentists offer sedation options, but you should be aware of the three most common.
Nitrous oxide takes the edge off and wears off quickly enough that you can drive yourself home.
Oral sedation, taken before your appointment, creates a deeper sense of calm for patients who need a little more help relaxing.
IV sedation puts you in a sleep-like state when needed for more significant anxiety or complex treatment needs. Many patients remember little to nothing of the appointment.
A qualified dentist will talk these options through with you and decide together which is the right fit.
Cleanings have changed
Some practices in Oregon are now certified in Guided Biofilm Therapy, or GBT — a modern approach to dental cleanings that many patients describe as genuinely comfortable. Instead of traditional metal scraping, GBT uses a combination of air, fine powder, and warm water to gently yet thoroughly remove bacteria and buildup. A special stain reveals exactly where bacteria are hiding, so hygienists can clean with precision rather than guesswork. No unnecessary discomfort. No scraping where it isn't needed.
A Comfort Menu
The best dental practices consider the whole experience, not just the teeth. Look for an office that offers small comforts that make a real difference — things like sedation options, neck pillows and blankets, movies and entertainment, fidget toys, your choice of calming music, and earplugs. At New Smiles, we call this our Comfort Menu because we believe your visit should feel just as good as the results.
If it's been a while, that's okay
One of the things I hear most from new patients is "I'm embarrassed — it's been years."
Please hear this: we have seen everything, and our job is not to lecture you. Our initial consultations are just a conversation. No one is committed to anything before they're ready. At New Smiles, we treat you like family — you know, a nice and supportive family — with a blanket, your favorite music, and ready to discuss your health needs.
Our office recommends cleanings every six months. Now that you know the three things to look for in a dentist, take a breath, and go make your next appointment.
