A local hero has been recognized.

Amy Christie, a faculty advisor for the Sherwood Middle School Builder’s Club, has received the “Everyday Hero” award from the Kiwanis Club of Tigard, citing her outstanding support and contributions.

The Kiwanis Club of Tigard service organization was established in 1964. The Tigard branch includes West Linn, Sherwood, and Beaverton as well. Its members volunteer to support regional projects like handing out food and meals, donating to disability and cancer programs, and supporting the Salvation Army.

One of the programs it supports is the Builder’s Club, which offers positive guidance through mentorship to middle school students by visiting, speaking, and partnering on service projects. The program helps students build leadership skills by serving their community.

Christie has served as faculty advisor with the Sherwood Middle School Builder’s Club for three years, since it began. Her duties include coordinating communication between the Kiwanis Club and the school; planning projects including purchasing supplies; and leading fundraising projects.

One of the fundraisers was a garage sale last March, and proceeds benefitted youth experiencing homelessness. The garage sale raised $1,900.

Jaclynn Anderson is the president of the Kiwanis Club of Tigard.

“Christie's passion for helping to build the next generation of community leaders goes beyond what is required as a faculty advisor," Anderson said. “She is a true everyday hero who empowers her students and club members to understand the impact they can make individually and as a group of caring youth."

Cody Climer is the vice president of the Kiwanis Club of Tigard.

“Her dedication and leadership have been instrumental in the club’s success, fostering a spirit of service among middle school students,” Climer said. “Christie led her students through an ambitious fundraising garage sale project, demonstrating her exceptional organizational skills including securing the site in coordination with school administration; executing robust outreach to school parents to solicit donations; and organizing and directing students in planning and executing the large-scale event in collaboration with the Sherwood High School Key Club.”

The Kiwanis Club of Tigard celebrates Amy Christie’s exemplary commitment to service and her profound impact on the students of the Sherwood Middle School Builder's Club, Climer said.
