Sherwood High students win big at Kiwani Key Club convention
Local high-achievers take home scholarships, awards
SHERWOOD, Ore. — Sherwood High School’s team of Kiwani Key Clubbers collected some major wins at the 2026 District Convention.
The 76th annual Key Club 2026 District Convention was held March 6-8 at the downtown Portland Marriott. Key Club is an international student service organization sponsored by Kiwanis.
Over 150 clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest District participated to develop leadership skills, elect the 2026-27 district executive officers, and celebrate their service wins throughout the year, according to the program’s website.
During the educational weekend, more than 1,600 student club members and advisors attended workshops, received officer training, participated in spirit battles, and enhanced their leadership skills. This included 22 students from Sherwood High School.
The convention features an amazing wellness race, playfair ice breaker, keynote speakers, entertainment, and a forum on how to make the most of their college experience.
Sherwood’s students participated in officer training, and are slated to take over their positions on May 1. Some members competed and applied for scholarships, while other operated an exhibit hall table during the convention’s lunches.
Sherwood’s big wins
Out of 11,358 students in Key Club in the Pacific Northwest District, 8 scholarships were awarded.
Sherwood’s Key Club president Makaila Crawford won a $3,500 scholarship.
Sherwood High senior Naveen Soto was awarded a $1,500 scholarship. He operated as the 2025-26 Key Club lt. Governor, overseeing several clubs in the nearby geographical region.
“Both students have been exemplary Key Club leaders this past year, as demonstrated by the fact that they both won such prestigious recognition,” said Sue Cummins, Kiwanis Advisor to the Sherwood High School Key Club.
Sherwood junior Sarah Morgan won first place in the Oratorical Contest for her five-minute speech on servant leadership. Next, she’ll have the opportunity to perform her speech at the international competition in Dallas, Texas this July.
Sherwood freshmen Sophia Valladolid and Rosha Khorasanizedah won first place in the digital scrapbook contest, for their 74-page book covering events from April 2025 to March 2026. They have also been invited to the Dallas international competition.
Out of all the Pacific Northwest District clubs, only two received recognition as a Distinguished Club — including Sherwood’s. To meet the criteria, the club’s service record is taken into account. This past year, the Sherwood Key Club members logged in close to 2000 hours of service with a variety of club-authorized projects, according to Cummins.
