Ham Ji Bak opens in Sherwood with authentic Korean cuisine and family hospitality
Get a taste of authentic Korean food at Sherwood's new restaurant
SHERWOOD, Ore. — As Korean culture has gained global visibility through K-pop acts like BTS, Korean television dramas, beauty and skincare lines, and growing international interest in Korean cuisine, Sherwood residents now have another opportunity to experience the country's culinary traditions with the opening of Ham Ji Bak.
Located near Walgreens at 21035 S.W. Pacific Hwy., Ham Ji Bak opened its doors in Sherwood in June with a simple goal: to bring authentic Korean cuisine and the experience of gathering around the table with family and friends to the community.
The family-owned restaurant says its mission extends beyond serving food, according to owner David Song, who also owns the Pixiu Mala Hongtang casual hot pot restaurant in uptown Portland along Northwest 23rd Avenue.
"Our goal has always been to create a place where people can experience authentic Korean food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere," Song said. "The name Ham Ji Bak represents the feeling of gathering around a table to share a meal, connect with family and friends, and enjoy genuine hospitality. We wanted to bring that experience to Sherwood and become a place where both Korean families and the local community feel at home."
Song’s son Jason Lee said the family really likes being a part of the Sherwood community because everyone in town has been so nice during the soft opening and launch, so they are happy with the Sherwood location they chose.
“Some of the food might be a little foreign to a lot of people out there, but then he hopes that he can kind of ease people into trying all the types of side dishes when they do come in,” Lee said.
Ham Ji Bak is the culmination of a longtime dream rooted in both business experience and a passion for Korean cuisine.
"I've spent many years as a business owner, and throughout that journey I've always had a passion for food and serving people," Song said. "Korean cuisine is something I'm proud of, and I wanted to create a restaurant that showcases its quality and tradition. Opening Ham Ji Bak has been a dream of mine because I believe great food has the power to bring people together."
Sherwood stood out as the ideal location for that vision.
"Sherwood is a wonderful, growing community with friendly residents and strong family values," Song said. "We felt it was the perfect place to introduce authentic Korean cuisine. We wanted to offer something unique while becoming an active part of the local community."
Like many new restaurants, opening day took longer to arrive than expected.
"Opening the restaurant was a much longer journey than we expected," Song said. "Construction delays, permits, inspections, and equipment issues tested our patience. There were many moments when we had to solve unexpected problems, but we never gave up. Seeing customers enjoy our food today makes every challenge worthwhile."
Now that the restaurant is open, the biggest reward has been building relationships with guests.
"The most rewarding part has been seeing guests smile after their meal and hearing them say they'll be back," Song said. "Many customers have brought their friends and family after their first visit, and that means a great deal to us. Building relationships with our guests has been the greatest reward."
Ham Ji Bak emphasizes traditional Korean cooking methods, generous portions, and quality ingredients.
"We focus on authentic flavors, generous portions, and high-quality ingredients," Song said. "Every dish is prepared with great attention to detail, and many recipes are based on traditional Korean cooking methods. We also strive to provide warm, attentive service so every guest feels welcomed, whether they're trying Korean food for the first time or have enjoyed it for years."
Among the menu's signature offerings, Bossam holds a special place.
"Our Bossam is especially meaningful because it represents the style of Korean cooking we love—simple, comforting, and centered around quality ingredients," Song said. "We're also proud of our Galbi, Korean BBQ, and traditional stews, which reflect the flavors many of us grew up enjoying."
Since opening, customers have gravitated toward several signature dishes.
"Our most popular dishes have been Bossam, Galbi, Korean BBQ, Kimchi Jjigae, and our lunch specials," Song said. "Personally, I enjoy Bossam because it's comforting, flavorful, and perfect for sharing with family and friends."
Looking ahead, Ham Ji Bak plans to continue expanding its menu while becoming more involved in the community.
"We're continuing to introduce new menu items and seasonal specialties while listening closely to customer feedback," Song said. "Our goal is to keep improving and provide guests with fresh reasons to come back. We also plan to become more involved in community events and continue supporting the Sherwood community."
Song said the family is grateful for the reception the restaurant has received since opening.
"We sincerely appreciate the incredible support we've received from the Sherwood community," Song said. "Whether you're already a fan of Korean food or trying it for the first time, everyone is welcome at Ham Ji Bak. We hope every guest leaves feeling satisfied, appreciated, and excited to return. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to become part of this wonderful community."
