SHERWOOD, Ore. — For many families, summer break is filled with vacations, camps, and time outdoors. But dentists often recommend using part of that window for something many teenagers eventually need: a wisdom teeth evaluation.

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that typically begin developing during the teenage years. Because modern jaws are often smaller than those of our ancestors, these teeth frequently don’t have enough room to erupt properly. When that happens, they may grow sideways, remain trapped under the gums, become infected, crowd or cause decay on neighboring teeth, or entangle with the nerve along the jaw.

At New Smiles, we often recommend evaluating wisdom teeth earlier than many people expect — around age 12. At this stage, the teeth often are still developing, which allows us to monitor how they are forming and determine whether removal may be necessary. Early evaluation doesn’t always mean immediate treatment, but it gives families time to plan ahead and avoid unexpected problems later.

Summer is often the most convenient time to schedule removal. With school out of session and sports schedules lighter, teens have time to recover without missing important activities or falling behind in class. Most patients are surprised to learn that recovery is typically quicker than anticipated, especially when modern techniques are used.

Today’s wisdom teeth procedures are more comfortable than many people remember. We can also guide you on sedation options that are appropriate for your child. Our practice also offers PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin), a treatment that uses the body’s own natural healing factors to help reduce inflammation and the chance of dry sockets, all while supporting faster recovery.

For families who want to get ahead of summer planning, New Smiles is hosting a special wisdom teeth event on May 9. During this event, patients can receive a:

  • Complimentary CBCT scan (a detailed 3D view of developing wisdom teeth).
  • Complimentary consultation from one of our dentists.
  • Same-day pre-operative visit to streamline your schedule (if a wisdom teeth extraction is needed and chosen).

Our goal with this event is to make life easier for busy parents. Let us help your children avoid unnecessary dental complications in the future.

Because CBCT imaging and consultation time are limited, appointments for the May 9 event must be scheduled in advance at (503) 925-9595.

For families considering wisdom teeth evaluation this year, a simple early check can make planning treatment far easier and help ensure a smooth, comfortable summer for everyone.
